Liar's Dice
A downloadable game for Windows
A digital version of Liar's Dice, made over the course of six months during various episodes of stress-induced insanity. Rules are listed below for those who don't know how to play.
RULES
Liar's Dice is a game of strategy, deception, and a healthy dose of luck. Each player starts with five six-sided dice, kept hidden underneath a dice cup. Over the course of the game, players will lose their dice. When a player has no more dice, they are eliminated. The last player remaining wins the match.
At the start of a round, everybody rolls the dice in their cup. The players look at their dice secretly, but do not reveal their roll to the other players. The game is to try and guess how many dice in total (including your dice and everybody else's) are showing a certain face. Players take turns bidding, stating their guess for both the number of dice and the value of the face. For example, a bid of "Five Threes" means that player is guessing there are at least five dice showing three in total.
The value of the bid can only go up, never down. On your turn, you must raise either the number of dice (e.g. Two Ones to Three Ones) or the value of the face (Two Ones to Two Twos). If you decide to raise the number of dice, you may lower the value of the face if you wish (Two Fives to Three Ones).
When somebody hears a bid they think is too high, they can challenge that bid by saying "Liar!" or "Spot On!" Once a challenge has been issued, everybody lifts up their cups to reveal their dice. For a 'Liar' challenge to succeed, the bid must be higher than the actual number of dice. For instance, if the bid was Six Fives but there are only four fives in play, a Liar challenge would succeed. On a success, the player who made the bid loses one of their dice. On a failure, the challenging player loses one of their dice.
In a 'Spot On' challenge, the bid must exactly match the actual number of dice. This is a far riskier challenge to issue, but the payoff can be great. On a failure, the challenging player loses one of their dice. However, on a success, all other players lose a die.
